Overview
The Philips DreamStation BiPAP Auto is for people whose prescriber has chosen bilevel therapy for obstructive sleep apnea. Rather than one steady pressure, it gives you a gentler one on each out-breath, and it can also run as a standard CPAP if your prescription changes.
Night to night, it works like the other first-generation DreamStations. Turn the dial for the menu, press the Ramp button for a softer start, and check the screen in the morning to see how you did. The display dims by itself when the bedroom goes dark.
Key features:
- Higher pressure range: Its top pressure is higher than the DreamStation Expert's or DreamStation 2's, which gives your provider more range if your prescription changes.
- Mask fit check: Run a fit check from the setup menu, and a green or red bar tells you whether your seal is holding.
- Altitude compensation: It compensates for altitude automatically, whether you sleep at home or at a mountain cabin, with nothing for you to set.
- Oxygen compatible: Supplemental oxygen can join at the mask end without a pressure valve at low flows, as Philips' user manual explains.
- DC power: Philips' DC cords and battery kit, sold separately, let you run therapy at the cottage or in a parked RV.
The DreamStation BiPAP Auto suits people prescribed bilevel therapy who'd like the familiar DreamStation dial and screen, or who already own DreamStation parts. For a newer bilevel with a built-in humidifier and app coaching, look at the ResMed AirCurve 11 VAuto.
Note: Filters and water tanks for this BiPAP are first-generation DreamStation parts, which Philips makes separately from its DreamStation 2 parts. We stock the matching water chamber for the DreamStation.
How it works
Choosing a version
The machine alone is the smallest and lightest setup, and it's ready to fly as it is. The humidifier version adds a clip-on heated humidifier and a standard tube.
The heated tube version adds a tube that warms the air on the way to your mask, with a temperature setting of its own. Choose it if you'd like to set the air temperature as well as the humidity.
Filling the water tank
Lift the tank out of the humidifier before you fill it, and use room-temperature distilled water only, up to the maximum fill line. A full tank should get you through a normal night.
In the morning, wait about 15 minutes for the heater plate to cool before lifting out the tank. Never carry the machine with water still in the tank.

Rise time, ramp and comfort
Your care provider chooses which comfort options are on and which ones you can adjust yourself.
- Rise time sets how quickly each breath reaches full pressure, and works only with Bi-Flex off
- The Ramp button gives you a lower starting pressure, as often as you like
- SmartRamp holds that lower pressure until the machine senses you need more
- Automatic On and Off follow your mask going on and coming off
Humidity modes and heated tube
Philips designed Adaptive mode to keep water from collecting in the tube by following your bedroom's conditions. Fixed mode holds one constant heat, which Philips says can let condensation form. Attach the heated tube and the machine switches to heated tube mode by itself.

DreamMapper and therapy records
With Bluetooth built in, the DreamMapper app shows your nightly results on your phone. It's on the App Store and Google Play in Canada, and the machine works exactly the same if you'd rather not use it.

Parts that fit the DreamStation BiPAP
It takes the same filters and clip-on humidifier as the DreamStation Expert and other first-generation DreamStations. Its tubes and DC power parts fit the DreamStation 2 as well.

Auto bilevel
The BiPAP Auto uses a higher pressure as you inhale and a lower one as you exhale. In Auto-BiPAP mode it adjusts both as your breathing changes overnight, inside the range on your prescription.
Bi-Flex
Bi-Flex gives a little pressure relief each time you breathe out, which some people find more comfortable. It comes in several strengths, from a light touch to more noticeable relief.
Optional humidifier
Buy the BiPAP with a heated humidifier, or on its own if you don't need moist air. The humidifier clips onto the back, so you can take it off later for travel or cleaning.
Pressure reports
Besides your hours and mask seal, the screen can show the inhale and exhale pressures you stayed at or below for most of the night. That helps you and your care provider see whether your limits still fit.

Common questions
When should I replace the BiPAP's filters and tubing?
Philips' 2021 manual gives the disposable ultra-fine filter 30 days and the reusable blue pollen filter six months, with a monthly rinse in between. Philips gives the tubing six months, and the humidifier's tank and seal a year.
Is a BiPAP right for me instead of CPAP?
That's your prescriber's call. BiPAP is Philips' name for bilevel therapy, and Philips designed this machine for obstructive sleep apnea as a bilevel alternative to CPAP. A lower pressure on the out-breath can make exhaling easier, and it can also run as a regular CPAP.
Was the DreamStation BiPAP part of the Philips recall?
Yes, Health Canada's 2021 recall lists it as the DreamStation Auto BiPAP, for units made before April 26, 2021. Their sound-dampening foam could degrade, and its particles or chemical emissions could be breathed in. Philips states that new and remediated units contain silicone foam, which hasn't shown safety problems in its testing. The manufacture date is on each machine's label.
Can I fly with the DreamStation BiPAP?
Yes, with the humidifier removed. Philips approves it for use in the cabin on AC or DC power, as long as no humidifier or modem is installed. Unclip the humidifier using its release button, and pack the machine as carry-on, never in checked bags.
How is it different from the DreamStation Expert?
They're built on the same DreamStation body and take the same parts. The BiPAP Auto reaches a higher top pressure and adds Bi-Flex and rise time for comfort, while the Expert is an auto CPAP. Your prescription decides which one you need.
