Overview

The Fisher & Paykel Nova Micro is a nasal pillows mask for nose breathers who want as little on their face as possible. Soft cushions nestle just inside your nostrils and fill with air to seal, leaving the bridge of your nose and the area beneath your eyes completely free.

Night after night, there's very little to notice. The compact frame rests close to your face so you can settle into whatever position you like, and each side strap fine-tunes the fit on its own. Three parts come apart and go back together easily.

Key features:

  • Lightest from F&P: F&P rates it the lightest and smallest mask in its range, at 38 grams fully assembled.
  • Try every size: Small, Medium, and Large cushions all come in the Fit Pack, letting you test each one before you reorder.
  • Soft where it counts: In F&P's own trial of 39 users, all but one described the pillows as soft or very soft in the nose.
  • Room for higher pressures: It's rated for therapy pressures up to 25 cm H2O, a higher ceiling than the Solo Pillows offers.
  • No magnets inside: Fisher & Paykel names the Nova Micro on its list of masks that contain no magnets at all.
  • Licensed in Canada: Health Canada licensed the Nova Micro as a medical device in 2024, under the number shown in Specifications.

Nose breathers who want the least mask possible, people boxed in by larger masks, and anyone who likes a clear view for reading in bed will get on well with it. For F&P's pillows mask with a diffuser that softens exhaled air, compare the Brevida.

Note: The Nova Micro isn't supported on the ResMed AirMini travel machine, which ResMed supports with its AirMini mask packs only. If you use one, call us before ordering.

How it works

Putting it on

Hold the mask so the cushion tab faces up and guide the pillows into your nostrils, then pull the headgear over your head. Spread the two rear straps apart where they sit on the back of your head, and adjust each side strap gently until the mask feels secure but loose.

Connect the swivel to your machine's air tubing and turn it on. If air leaks, ease the cushion away from your face and seat it again before you touch the straps. To take it off, pull the mask away from your nose and lift the headgear up and over your head.

Daily and weekly care

After each night, peel the cushion off the frame by its tab and hand wash the cushion and frame in lukewarm water with a little soap dissolved in it, soaking no longer than ten minutes. Rinse thoroughly in fresh water and let everything dry away from direct sun.

Every seven days, give the headgear the same treatment. Leave out alcohol, bleach, chlorine, antiseptics, and moisturizers, use no dishwasher for any part, and never try to separate the frame from its tube and swivel, which Fisher & Paykel joins permanently.

Features and fit

Finding your size at home

F&P publishes no printed sizing chart for the Nova Micro, so trying the cushions on is the surest test.

  • The Fit Pack comes with the Medium fitted, plus a Small and a Large
  • A size letter on each cushion tells the three apart
  • Keep whichever seals and feels most comfortable, as F&P advises
  • Single sizes suit you once you know which one fits
Putting it on and sealing

Guide the cushion into your nose first, then draw the headgear up and over your head.

  • Hook each side strap back over its frame post if you've taken the headgear off
  • Tighten the side straps only until it feels comfortable, never more
  • The cushion tab should point up and the name on the straps read upright
  • For a leak, lift the cushion away and reseat it rather than pulling tighter
Weight and materials

Fisher & Paykel's instructions put the whole assembled mask at 38 grams, and some people in its trials said it felt like wearing no mask at all.

  • Made without natural rubber latex or DEHP
  • Silicone cushion, nylon frame and swivel, and soft fabric and foam in the headgear
Machines, pressures, and spares

The Nova Micro works on home CPAP, APAP, and bilevel machines, joining them through the standard connector on its tube.

  • Not for the ResMed AirMini, which takes ResMed's AirMini packs only
  • Rated for therapy pressures from 4 to 25 cm H2O
  • Neither maker publishes a ResMed mask setting for it
  • Spare cushions and headgear are sold separately

Compact frame

With so little resting on your face, the Nova Micro is easy to forget once you drift off. Fisher & Paykel calls it the smallest and lightest mask it has ever made.

MicroPillows cushion

Soft silicone pillows rest just within your nostrils and inflate to match the shape of your nose. You get a gentle seal, leaving your nose bridge and the area under your eyes untouched.

Side straps

Each side strap adjusts on its own, so you can even out the fit when one side needs a little more or less. Two rear straps spread apart behind your head to keep everything steady.

Three parts

The frame, tube, and swivel stay joined as one piece, and the cushion and headgear lift straight off it. There's no diffuser or clip to keep track of, so the morning routine stays short.

Common questions

How often should I replace Nova Micro parts?

Fisher & Paykel's care schedule calls for a fresh cushion every 14 days, a new frame every three months, and fresh headgear at six. Its instructions add an outer limit: retire the whole mask within 12 months of first use, and any part sooner if it cracks, tears, or discolours.

Will the Nova Micro work if I breathe through my mouth?

It's meant for people who breathe mainly through the nose as they sleep. When your mouth drops open, therapy air escapes and you may wake with a dry mouth. Nasal congestion can block the airflow too, and then a mask covering nose and mouth, such as F&P's Evora Full, is the better match.

Will nasal pillows make my nostrils sore?

They shouldn't. In F&P's trial, 38 of 39 people rated the pillows soft or very soft in the nose. Soreness usually points to the wrong size or straps pulled too tight. F&P's advice is to wear the mask as loose as it goes without leaking, and to try another cushion from the Fit Pack.

How quiet is the Nova Micro?

Fisher & Paykel rates its sound pressure at about 13 dBA, lower than the figures it gives for the Brevida, the Nova Nasal, and the Solo. Your breath leaves through small holes in the frame rather than a diffuser, so keep them clear of pillows and bedding.

Should I choose the Nova Micro or the Brevida?

Choose the Nova Micro for the least mask on your face and a choice of three cushion sizes. The Brevida also seals at the nostrils, comes in two seal sizes, and adds a diffuser to soften exhaled air. Both are rated to 25 cm H2O, and neither contains magnets.

Do I need a prescription to buy this mask?

No. Masks don't need a prescription, so you can order this one straight away. We only ask for a prescription with CPAP machines and ventilators, before they ship.
