Overview

The Pilot Flex keeps your CPAP running where there's no outlet, or when the power goes out at home. It suits campers, cottagers and frequent flyers, and anyone in an area where storms knock out the grid, who'd rather not skip therapy for a night.

It's thin and light enough to slip into a backpack, and it charges from the power adapter you already own at home. Pair it with the cable kit for your machine, and the same battery covers a weekend away and a blackout back home.

Key features:

  • Carry-on capacity: Sized just under the threshold where airlines require approval for spare batteries, so it can fly in the cabin with you.
  • Backup between wall and machine: Set up in the middle of your power chain, it stays charged and keeps therapy going if the electricity drops.
  • Works across brands: With the matching cable kit, it powers ResMed AirSense and AirMini machines, Philips DreamStations and several other models.
  • Charges your phone too: Its USB ports top up a phone or tablet, though the USB-C port switches off while a CPAP is connected.
  • Four-light gauge: A row of green lights shows roughly how much charge is left, so you know before bed whether it'll last the night.
  • Licensed in Canada: It's listed on a Class II Health Canada medical device licence held by the Ontario company behind Medistrom.

If you want therapy that keeps going on a canoe trip, a long-haul flight or a night when the power fails, the Pilot Flex was made for it. For the longest run between charges, plan on switching off the humidifier and heated tube.

How it works

Charging it

Plug your CPAP's own power adapter into the Charge Port on the battery. AirSense 10 adapters fit straight in, while AirSense 11 and AirMini adapters use a short adapter cable. The green lights flash in sequence while it charges and hold steady when it's full.

Running your CPAP from it

Connect the output cable's L-shaped yellow end to the battery and the round black end to your machine. The battery detects the voltage your CPAP needs. If the lights go dark after a few minutes with nothing drawing power, press the button to wake it.

Looking after it

Wipe the case with a clean, dry cloth after disconnecting it, and keep it away from water, direct sunlight and freezing cold. Never open the case or use a battery that's been damaged. Charge it fully before storage and at least every six months.

Features and use

Flying with the battery

Transport Canada says lithium batteries belong in your carry-on and never in checked luggage. Spares under 100 Wh need no airline approval under Canadian screening rules, and this one qualifies.

  • Cover the ports or pack it in a pouch so the terminals can't short
  • Some airlines ban charging it on board
  • Do a test night at home before your first trip
Setting up for power cuts

Plug your machine's own adapter into the battery, the adapter into the wall, and the output cable from the battery to your CPAP. The battery then sits in the middle, topping itself up while you sleep.

  • It naps after a few idle minutes, and one button press wakes it
  • AirMini users need a different adapter for this setup, since the AirMini's own adapter only charges it
  • Link a second battery for a longer outage
What changes the run time

In Medistrom's own testing, the humidifier and heated tube matter far more than anything else. With both switched off, the battery lasts through a full night and often more, but with both running it may last only a few hours.

  • Higher pressure settings draw more power
  • A leaking mask makes the machine work harder
Machines and cable kits

The AirMini cables are packed with the battery. For any other machine you'll add a Pilot Flex cable kit, sold separately, and Medistrom says to use only the cables listed for this battery, not cables from the older Pilot Lite range.

  • AirSense 10 and Luna G3: kit MPFR10DOC
  • AirSense 11: kit MPFR11PFK
  • DreamStation 1, DreamStation 2 and System One 60 Series: kit MPFDS2DOC
  • Bilevel machines, AirCurve included, aren't on Medistrom's list

Carry-on capacity

Medistrom sized it to stay just below the cut-off that triggers extra checks on spare batteries. On most trips, that means your therapy boards the plane with you instead of staying home.

Backup power

Wired between the wall and your CPAP, it stays charged and steps in if the electricity goes out. That way a storm or a grid failure doesn't have to cost you a night of therapy.

Auto voltage

The battery detects which of its two outputs your CPAP uses and switches over by itself, with nothing to set. With the matching cable, one battery serves ResMed, Philips and several other brands.

Aluminium case

Medistrom casts the case from aluminium instead of moulding it from plastic. The metal helps carry heat away and is meant to spring back from the knocks of life in a travel bag.

Common questions

Will the Pilot Flex work with my CPAP machine?

Medistrom lists the ResMed AirMini, AirSense 10 and AirSense 11, Philips DreamStation 1 and 2, the System One 60 Series, the Luna G3, the Löwenstein Prisma SMART and a few Apex and SmartMed models. Only the AirMini cables are included, so add the kit for your machine.

How many hours will one charge last?

It depends mostly on whether your humidifier is on. Medistrom's tests at a low pressure, with the humidifier and heated tube off, show roughly 16 to 20 hours on an AirSense 10, AirSense 11, DreamStation 2 or AirMini. With both turned on, that drops to about 2 to 3 hours.

Can I take the Pilot Flex on a plane?

Yes, in your carry-on. Its capacity is just under the 100 Wh level where airline approval begins, and Transport Canada says lithium batteries never go in checked bags. Protect the terminals and check your airline's own rules before you fly.

Is a charger included with the battery?

No. The battery is designed to charge from the power adapter that came with your CPAP, which takes about 2 to 3 hours with an AirSense or DreamStation adapter. A USB-C wall charger also works, and Medistrom sells its own adapter separately.

Is the Pilot Flex licensed by Health Canada?

Yes. It's listed on a Class II Health Canada medical device licence held by Choice One Medical, the Ontario company behind Medistrom. The licence number is in the specifications if you'd like to look it up.

How should I store the battery between trips?

Charge it fully before you put it away, and top it up at least every six months. Medistrom says skipping that voids its warranty. Keep it somewhere cool, dark and dry, and away from heat sources or a hot car.
