Overview

The ResMed AirFit F40 is a compact full face mask whose soft silicone cushion rests beneath your nose and over your mouth, with no hard parts touching your face. It moves as you do, so the seal tends to hold when you roll over.

Night to night, the padded frame stays below your eyes, out of your line of sight. A short, flexible tube takes the drag off the mask, the vent keeps your breathing quiet, and magnetic clips let you take it off and refit it fast.

Key features:

  • Smallest front-tube design: ResMed calls the F40 its smallest full face mask with the tube at the front, based on its own comparisons.
  • Fits most faces: Three cushion sizes and three headgear sizes fit 98% of the faces measured in ResMed's studies.
  • Easy from the start: In ResMed's home trials, every experienced CPAP user found the F40 easy to fit and adjust.
  • Quiet for two: Its QuietAir vent ring disperses your breath softly, which ResMed designed with bed partners in mind.
  • Bathroom breaks: The elbow unclips with two side buttons, so a trip out of bed doesn't mean taking the mask off.
  • Licensed in Canada: Health Canada first licensed the AirFit F40 in August 2024, and its number appears under Specifications.

The AirFit F40 suits mouth breathers, side sleepers, and anyone who wants as little mask on their face as possible while still covering the mouth. For the tube on top of your head instead, look at the AirFit X30i or AirTouch F30i.

Note: Every F40 has magnets in the frame and lower clips, as ResMed offers no magnet-free version. Please contact us first if anyone in your bed uses a pacemaker, a defibrillator, or any implant sensitive to magnets.

How it works

Putting on the F40

Twist both magnetic clips off the frame and place the cushion under your nose. With the ResMed logo facing out, draw the headgear over your head so the top strap rests on the crown, then bring the lower straps below your ears and snap the clips back on.

Adjust the upper tabs evenly, then the lower straps, until the mask feels steady without pressing. Long hair can pass through the back of the headgear. Finally, attach your air tube to the short tube and press the elbow into the frame until it clicks.

Getting a good seal

If air escapes near your nose, ease the cushion away from your face, settle it back under your nose, and then adjust the upper straps. A leak around your mouth is a job for the lower straps instead.

When the seal under your nose stays poor, move the top strap forward or back on your head. Leaks that keep coming back can mean the wrong cushion size, since sizes differ between masks. Avoid overtightening, which ResMed warns can cause red marks or sores.

Features and fit

Cushion and headgear sizes

The F40 comes with a single frame, so you choose two sizes: a cushion that suits your nose and headgear that suits your head.

  • Cushions: Small-Wide, Medium and Large, matched with ResMed's printable template
  • Headgear: Small, Standard and Large
  • We carry Medium with all three headgear sizes, and Small-Wide and Large with Standard
  • ResMed's studies found these sizes fit 98% of faces
Set your machine to Pillows

This is the detail most people miss. Although it's a full face mask, ResMed asks you to choose Pillows, not Full Face, in the mask settings of an AirSense, AirCurve or S9.

  • Runs on the CPAP and bilevel machines on ResMed's compatibility list
  • Not compatible with the AirMini
  • On another brand of machine, ask us which setting to use
Results from ResMed's user trials

ResMed had experienced CPAP users sleep in the F40 at home, comparing it with the AirFit F20 in one trial and with another maker's full face mask in a second:

  • Every participant got a seal and found it comfortable
  • All of them found it easy to fit and adjust
  • Nearly all could sleep in, and switch to, the position they liked
  • Clinicians found it easy to fit on nearly every patient
Spare parts for the F40

No AirFit F20 or F30 parts fit the F40, so replacement cushions and headgear need to be made for this mask.

  • Spare cushions come with their QuietAir vent ring
  • You can buy cushions and headgear separately, size by size
  • A frame system replaces the frame and cushion together, without headgear
Front view of the ResMed AirFit F40 full face mask, with grey headgear and a short tube below

Compact cushion

The silicone cushion sits just below your nose and wraps your mouth, with no hard parts against your face. It moves with you, so the seal tends to hold when you change position.

Open view

With the cushion below your nose and the padded frame beneath your eyes, you can read, watch TV or wear glasses in bed. Its soft fabric padding is designed to leave fewer marks on your face.

Short tube

A short, flexible tube hangs from the elbow and moves as you do, so the main hose is less likely to drag on the mask. The elbow unclips with two buttons when you get up.

Quiet vent

Your breath out spreads gently through the cushion's own vent ring, keeping both the sound and the breeze soft. A light sleeper beside you is less likely to notice it.

Common questions

How often should I replace the F40 cushion?

ResMed's schedule gives the cushion a month, the frame system three months, and the headgear six. Replace parts sooner if you see cracks, crazing or tears, which the user guide treats as signs of wear.

Why does my machine need the Pillows setting?

Both ResMed's user guide and its compatibility list name Pillows as the setting for the AirFit F40 on AirSense, AirCurve and S9 machines, even though it's a full face mask. Choosing Full Face out of habit is an easy slip, so check the setting before your first night.

Can I wear glasses with the AirFit F40?

Yes. ResMed says you can wear glasses to read or watch TV in bed with the F40 on. The cushion stays below your nose and the frame curves beneath your eyes, so there's nothing in the way of your lenses.

Will it suit me if I sleep on my side?

It's designed for any position, and side sleepers are one of the groups ResMed names. The cushion has no hard parts, so it shapes itself against your pillow, and the frame keeps contact around your ears and eyes to a minimum.

How is the AirFit F40 different from the AirFit F20?

The F20 cushion rests over the bridge of your nose, while the F40 sits under it, and ResMed calls the F40 its smallest full face mask with a front tube. The two don't share parts, so F20 cushions and headgear won't fit an F40.

Do I need a prescription to buy this mask?

No. Masks don't need a prescription, so you can order this one straight away. We only ask for a prescription with CPAP machines and ventilators, before they ship.
